We all know Porsche is currently using its engineering magic to develop a downsized four-cylinder unit. At the same time, we all want to find out if this will follow its boxer tradition or not. A Motor Trend report has pushed many into a negative mood, explaining that Porsche will come up with an in-line 4. There’s no need to worry about that though, we want to remind you Porsche has already confirmed it will give us a turbocharged flat four.
“We will continue with the downsizing strategy and develop a new four-cylinder boxer engine, which will see service in the next-generation Boxster and Cayman,” Porsche CEO Matthias Muller told Auto Motor und Sport magazine a while back.
In a recent casual discussion with a Porsche insider, we got a light-hearted response to our question on the upcoming engine - “imagine taking two cylinders off the current turbo flat six and you won't be very far from the truth.”
After all, Porsche coming up with an in-line four wouldn’t make sense, at least not for the world we are living in. For one thing, it would mean your brand spaking new Porsche shares its engine type with an amusingly large palette of vehicles, from hot hatches to pickup trucks. Still, we shall leave these kind of thoughts for our nightmares and focus on having to wait until 2017 when Porsche’s hybrid revolution is set to hit us.
