When BMW was doing subtle vertically-designed kidney grilles, they also had a little thing called the 02 Series. Do not mistake this 1966 to 1977 family of compact executive cars with the modern 2 Series.
The 02 Series has little in common with its spiritual successor that came to the market way later, since 2014. These 02s were based on the “New Class” sedans and coupes, which later evolved into the 5 Series and the E9 range. They were nimble and had cool designations to directly signal their engine displacements: 1602, 1802, or 2002.

Naturally, the most hyped vintage representative of the 02 Series is the latter. Loved and cared for in the real world, it has turned out to be quite a darling of the imaginary realm as well. And we have seen numerous attempts at resurrecting its patina styling. Some were quite enticing if you ask us.

Such as that one instance when a 2 Series Coupe was splashed with a modernized 1972 BMW 2002 tii’s rear end for tasty, minimalist styling. Now it’s time to check out a different POV. It also comes from another virtual artist, who has even more experience with neo-retro reinventions.

Alan Derosier, the pixel master better known as alan_derosier on social media, has decided to kick off the new year with a cool rejuvenation of the iconic 2002. Naturally dubbed “2022,” this little BMW has a large pack of vertical radiator grille elements. But it does not look unnatural at all. And we trust his interpretation.

After all, this is the same CGI expert that’s involved with a reborn 1980s legend from France. That would be the Renault 5 Turbo, which is being given a second, contemporary chance. All courtesy of a little “atelier” company called Legende Automobiles, in the form of the stylish Turbo3 restomod.

Anyway, with this BMW “2022” being a simple ideation sketch, it’s logical to assume this will forever remain merely wishful thinking. And this is simply heartbreaking... Perhaps we’ll get a real one for 2222!
