Reilly: Opel Will Enjoy Authority within New GM

General Motors is still working on the viability plan for Opel and, at the same time, it holds negotiations with all involved parties to ensure the company's success. Following the meeting of the GM Board of Directors, Opel/Vauxhall interim boss Nick Reilly said in a statement that he still wants to reveal the survival plan by mid-December.

"I still intend to present a plan for Opel/Vauxhall’s future by the middle of December. We have an obligation to our customers, employees and to all stakeholders to do the very best job we can to formulate and implement it. We will stay focused on the job at hand. We all know what we must deliver and that we must do this with speed," he said.

Reilly said nothing about the job cuts or production modifications across Europe but, if we are to trust the rumors, the US-based manufacturer intends to eliminate around 9,000 jobs across the continent, with Germany to be the most affected country. 50 to 60 percent of the jobs will come from Opel's mainland, rumors are suggesting.

"Only with their support, can we make the plan work. Any reductions in staffing or capacity will be based on economic criteria and are subject to discussion with the various stakeholders. Equally important, we are committed to respecting employee rights while still taking the necessary measures to return the brands to profitability," Reilly said.

And even if Opel continues with General Motors, the German brand will continue to work independently and decide its own future, Reilly said.

"Opel/Vauxhall will enjoy authority, responsibility and accountability within new GM. I – along with my management colleagues – will be accountable for turning the business around."
