After revealing the jaw-droppingly gorgeous Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, the Italian manufacturer plans to modify the Giorgio platform to accommodate an SUV body shell. It’s no secret that an Alfa Romeo SUV is slated to be presented in the latter half of 2016, but nothing much is known about the thing. Happily, however, Alfa Romeo’s Reid Bigland decided to shed some light on the future model.
Speaking to Andrew Wendler of Car&Driver, the North American head honcho of the Italian brand confirmed that Alfa Romeo presented the D-SUV to its dealers during the Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles NV meeting in Las Vegas in August. “It’s well underway; we’ve shown the car to our dealers, but it’s got to be right before we bring it to the market,” declared Bigland.

Another detail shared by the former Ram Trucks numero uno is that the Alfa Romeo D-SUV will arrive in the United States in 2017, with Europe to get it a little earlier. In plain English, it means that the new model is slated to arrive in production-ready format no later than the 4th quarter of 2016.

Bigland also suggests that the D-SUV is a tad bigger than the BMW X3. Although that doesn’t necessarily mean that the Alfa Romeo crossover will be more practical than the German interloper, it’s a certainty that beauty will be its ace of spades. Speaking of aces, Alfa Romeo’s North American boss makes it clear that the D-SUV will also boast “peerless performance when it comes to zero-to-60 and Nurburgring times.”

Considering that the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio holds the record for the fastest sedan to lap the gruesome Nurburgring circuit, we tend to believe Mr. Bigland on this one. Therefore, do expect the yet unnamed crossover SUV to be animated by the 510 PS 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 of the Giulia Quadrifoglio. The rest of the engine lineup will consist of a turbocharged 2.0 gasoline mill, a 2.2 turbo diesel, and a 3.0 twin-turbo diesel.

After the D-SUV (codenamed Tipo 949), Alfa Romeo will launch three all-new models. These are currently known as the Tipo 961 executive sedan, Tipo 962 C-SUV, and Tipo 963 Spider & Coupe twins.
