The day has finally come when the guys from Regular Car Reviews actually praise a car. And what better car to break the ice than the BMW E30? They got their hands on a modest 318i but the things they said about it will stick in your head for quite a while, in the typical RCR fashion.
From an objective point of view the BMW E30 318i was one of the best selling models from the range back in the day. It used an old-fashion M42 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine making 140 HP and 175 Nm (129 lb-ft) of torque. Apart from the specs alone, which are darn impressive for the early 1990s, the engine revved up to 6,400 RPM with an unbelievably smooth and linear power delivery (we’ll let RCR explain what that means).
According to the reviewer, however, you have to understand a couple of things first, before starting to praise the E30. This is an old car. It will do things just like a new car but a lot louder and with less amenities, compared to what you’re used to.
It has manual AC and a loud engine, the cabin isn’t very well sound insulated and the ride can be a bit harsh. However, driving it is a must if you really want to consider yourself a true petrolhead. This is like ‘doing your high-school crush only 20 years later and she’s now 41, has 3 kids and no other option’. You can still tick her off the list, right?
Of course, in his usual way, the reviewer offers a couple of really interesting insights into what it’s like to own such a car. What’s more, he actually explains a lot of things and technical terms in this video with absolute clarity. It’s a rather decent display of knowledge and an episode like few others he’s done. We were downright impressed by how decent and calm he was throughout the eight minutes of the video. Check it out!
