We rarely bundle up auction listings, but this time around, Mecum’s recent event in Kissimmee featured a trio that just had to be shared together. Aptly named the “Red White Blue Collection,” it included just three 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe examples of the split window variety. Oddly enough, they even sold with pricing going up in the same order as they were patriotically promoted.
First up in the collection is the Riverside Red C2 from the first production model year, a ‘Vette that came with a lot of appeal on its own as well. That’s easy to see why – 1963 Corvettes are highly sought after by collectors, as “America’s sports car” made a huge leap forward in terms of styling and also premiered the Sting Ray branding.
This particular ‘63 has been taken in custody by the new owner for no less than $126,500 (it didn’t hit Mecum’s estimate of $150 to $175k, though), complete with its matching-numbers RD-suffix 327 cu in (300 hp) V8 engine with Harrison aluminum radiator and a four-barrel carburetor.
Its matching red interior was home to the four-speed manual transmission, while some of the convenience features included were the powered brakes, steering, windows, and the vintage Delco AM/FM radio. By the way, you’re not having a déjà vu when it comes to the interior pictures of all three vehicles – it's just that all of them have a red interior and the four-speed stick shift.
Next up, both pricing wise and in order of the colorful appearance, was the Code 936 Ermine White painted 1963 ‘Vette with a 490C Red vinyl upholstery interior that sold for $132k. This one also didn’t hit Mecum’s initial estimate of $140 to $160k, even though it featured the flagship RPO L84 fuel-injected engine.
That one, also hooked up to a four-speed manual transmission, was one of just 2,160 Corvettes delivered with the competition-derived Rochester “Ramjet” mechanical fuel injection that led to a power increase to 360 horsepower.
Last but certainly not least, comes the Daytona Blue with 490L Red interior 1963 Corvette Sting Ray that sold for the highest amount of them all – a cool $165k. We’re starting to notice a trend here, as this one also failed to impress with an amount above the initial estimate of $180k to $210k. Still, all three of them managed to snatch a total of $423,500, which isn’t too shabby at all.
