Don’t look now, but the Kia Soul is on the verge of becoming the best-selling model in the Kia lineup. The funky hatchback has been a hot seller for Kia since it was redesigned last year, but last month, it was just a few hundred units away from out-selling the brand’s most popular car, the Optima sedan.
The 2014 Kia Soul has seen the biggest sales gains among Kia’s lineup so far this year with an extra 21,569 units being moved through the first eight months of 2014. Kia sold 15,069 examples of the Soul (compared to 15,337 Optimas) giving the car a total of 104,777 year to date positioning this model as one of the top hatchbacks on the market, and that should continue to be the trend when the Soul EV hits dealers later this year. Year to date, it is less than 7,000 units away from eclipsing the Optima, and while it’s not clear if Soul can make up that kind of ground, it is posting some impressive numbers for Kia nonetheless.

More importantly, the Soul has been a driving force helping Kia set an all-time record for sales in August with 54,667 units, and on the year, Kia sales are up 6.9 percent with 404,389 units sold, which means that the South Korean automaker is outselling more “mainstream” automakers such as Dodge, Nissan and Volkswagen. Looking past the Kia Soul, the Sportage and Cadenza are also posting decent sales gains, but the rest of the Kia lineup is either holding steady or seeing a sales decline. The horizon has plenty of new product coming, though, with the all-new Sedona going on sale this year followed by redesigned versions of the Sorento and Optima within the next year.

Considering that the Kia Soul and Nissan Cube came out around the same time, it’s interesting to see how the two hatchbacks have fared on the market with Nissan preparing to drop the Cube next year.
