If you needed one more proof auction houses are the real power in the American auto industry landscape, then the Ford Roush Mustang Barrett-Jackson Edition is just that. Introduced a decade ago as the result of a tie-up between Sherwin-Williams, Roush, and Barrett-Jackson, this special breed of Mustang is ultra-limited and, of course, highly valuable.
Back then, only 25 such cars were made, and a number of them have repeatedly changed hands at various auctions as they moved from private owner to private owner. But at the upcoming sale in Scottsdale, Arizona, in March, Barrett-Jackson is placing under the hammer perhaps the most valuable of the bunch: the first one ever made.
The car is (still) in possession of Chris Connor of The Sherwin-Williams Company, but it will be made available as a donation to the auction house, which will try and sell it for as much as possible to benefit the Michael Phelps Foundation.
“We were honored to host Olympian Michael Phelps at Barrett-Jackson in the past, and we are very much looking forward to welcoming him and his wife Nicole to our March event for the auction of the very first Barrett-Jackson Edition Roush Mustang ever built,” said in a statement Craig Jackson, CEO of Barrett-Jackson.
“Their commitment to promoting healthy, active lives through their important work with the Michael Phelps Foundation is admirable, and we are glad we can help their efforts through this sale.”
Like all in its limited breed, this particular Mustang is powered by a Roush-supercharged V8 engine tied to a 5-speed manual transmission. Unlike all the others, it comes in Red Hot Chili Pepper paint with Snow White graphics over a leather interior. Unique appointments include seats with embroidered Barrett-Jackson logo, four-piece performance pedals, illuminated Roush sill plates, and the 01 nameplate.
No estimate as to how much the car is expected to fetch has been made.
