Red Bull Still Pushing for Webber's Deal Extension

After heavily criticizing Mark Webber for his presumable mistake in the Turkish Grand Prix – when he had the nerve to defend his 1st place ahead of teammate Sebastian Vettel and made contact with the German youngster some 17 laps to go – Red Bull's advisor Helmut Marko now insists that this incident will not affect the contract negotiations with the Australian driver.

Prior to the Turkish Grand Prix, Webber's stay at Red Bull was almost a done deal, as the 33-year old Aussie had recorded 2 consecutive wins from pole position and was starting the Istanbul race once again from 1st place on the grid. Marko told the media on Tuesday that nothing changed in that regard, and that the contract negotiations between the Austrian team and Webber are actually a formality.

I would say it is more or less a formality that the ongoing cooperation with Webber will be finalized in the next few days,” said Marko, talking to Austrian television 'Sport und Talk aus dem Hangar 7'.

After all that has been written or said in recent days, it's likely to assume that Webber himself has second thoughts about continuing in a team that seems to favor a much younger teammate – despite the constant denying from team principal Christian Horner – or maybe switch to another competitive outfit in his last years in the series.

After his win in the Monaco Grand Prix, Webber was linked with a Ferrari seat, while some reports suggested there are other teams that showed interest in signing the Australian driver. In case Red Bull do manage to finalize the negotiations with Webber in a positive way, Marko made it very clear that the deal would only be signed for one year.

Webber is not a youngster,” said Marko.
