Red Bull Is Like the Barcelona of F1, Ferrari Is Like Real Madrid - Alguersuari

Scuderia Toro Rosso's Jaime Alguersuari made an interesting football analogy between Red Bull Racing, whose young development programme got him a seat in Formula 1, and Ferrari. With no intention to step into the war of words between the two F1 teams, Alguersuari sees his team as a Barcelona of Formula 1, while Ferrari are more like Real Madrid. And here's why.

Red Bull is like Barcelona, building its drivers from when they are 15 and turning them into champions,” Alguersuari was quoted as saying to Diario AS newspaper in Spain. “Ferrari is more like Real Madrid, buying the most expensive players in the market.”

Well, being neutral on this, one cannot really argue the analogy is not true. However, the statement was not meant to hit at Ferrari's driver-related policies in any way, but rather to praise the way Red Bull's development programme turns young aspiring racers into F1 stars.

Speaking about this particular aspect of the Red Bull development scheme, the STR driver admitted that racing advisor Helmut Marko's move to name Daniel Ricciardo a Friday driver for the Faenza based team is only logical. While creating positive pressure within the STR garage, it will also help the Australian driver gain a much-needed experience driving F1 challengers.

His appointment is a very good confirmation of the operation of the Red Bull junior team,” admitted the 20-year old Spaniard. “Without this programme and the determination of Dr Helmut Marko, I would not be in Formula 1.”

His participation in the Friday practices will be a great experience for him, because he will be sharing information with me and Buemi and it will make him a better driver and a serious candidate for a place at Toro Rosso in the future,” he added.
