Red Bull Fear Power Deficit Due to Rear Wing

For the past few weeks, Red Bull officials and drivers have consistently lobbied for a limitation in the use of the adjustable rear wing in practice and qualifying. In order words, while not against the implementation of the aforementioned device in the series, the reigning world champions won't like to see it used before the Sunday race.

Letting us use it on all the straights, on all the laps, makes no sense,” Mark Webber recently told O Estado de S.Paulo.

In order to change that rule, Red Bull would need to gather full support from the other Formula 1 teams within the FOTA (Formula One Teams Association). The only problem is that not all teams agree with Red Bull's stance, especially since the use of the rear wing in qualifying serves the teams that are currently benefiting from the most powerful engines in the series. And it's not rocket science we're referring to Ferrari and Mercedes.

The (wing rules) has been discussed and approved at the FOTA level as well as the FIA level,” revealed an unnamed source for Finland's Turun Sanomat, as reported by the GMM news agency. “One team wants it to be different because their straight line speed is not as good as its competitors,” it added.

Straightline speed has always been a chapter where Red Bull had to pay the price for their less powerful Renault V8s in the past, and it seems that the rear wings are only augmenting that deficit towards Ferrari, McLaren and even Mercedes GP.

The only time teams are not allowed to use the adjustable rear wing to qualify or practice will be in rainy conditions, as confirmed by the FIA recently.
