Record OnStar Route Requests in July

It's the summer holiday season and no one knows that better than GM's OnStar, who reported that last month it received no less than 2 million requests for routes. The number is a record in itself and hides some surprising facts.

Unlike what we were initially inclined to believe, it's not some holiday resort which is the most sought after destination by American OnStar users. The service provider's data show that the location Americans look for the most is... Wal-Mart.

40,000 people asked OnStar for help locating a Wal-Mart last month. The list of the top ten most popular points of interest (out of a total of 13 million offered by OnStar) includes, in order, Holiday Inn, Home Depot, Walgreens and Marriott.

The top ten list is completed by McDonald’s, Bank of America, Starbucks, Target and Hampton Inn.

“Whether we route our subscribers to their favorite store or to a new restaurant to meet up with a friend, we are committed to providing drivers with useful and convenient services that make the driving experience a simple, safe and efficient one,”
said Scott Kubicki, OnStar vice president of subscriber services.

“During this summer’s busy travel season, our live advisers provided navigation service in record numbers and we expect to see a steady climb in navigation volume.”

As most of you already know, OnStar users can get directions to one of the millions of points of interest via the OnStar Destination Download. If that's not conclusive enough, an OnStar advisor can help anyone locate what they are looking for.
