Record March Sales Help BMW Close Gap on Mercedes’ Lead in the US

After wearing the luxury sales crown for 2 years, BMW had to settle for second place in 2013 as Mercedes-Benz sold more vehicles over the course of last year, led by the cheap CLA-Class models.

2014 didn’t bring great news either, up until March, the Stuttgart-based company having the lead over the Bavarians, a lead made up of 4,943 units.

However, March sales allowed BMW to close the gap to just 237 units behind Mercedes and competition is fiercer than ever. With 32,107 vehicles sold last month, the Munichers outpaced the Svabians who managed to push just 27,401 vehicles overall, a 11 percent increase due to the new S-Class and GLK models.

The best selling Bimmers were still the 3 Series and 4 Series duo that recorded a 14 percent increase overall and added up to about 30 percent of the total sales, with 10,120 units delivered over the last 31 days. The X3 model kept its pace too, with a 46 percent increase to 4,430 units.

Looking over the results of last year, when Mercedes took the crown from BMW, you’ll notice that the difference was made by just 3,254 units so the fight is still on towards the end of 2014.
