Reckless Driver Making It Easy for Insurance Scammer to Get Rear-Ended

Insurance scamming is one of the main reasons why dashcams have become so popular. Having the video proof that you did everything in your power to avoid a collision while the other driver did exactly the opposite is pure gold if the other guy asks for money or threatens to sue you.

But for the video to work, it has to show two things as clearly as possible: the other driver's intent and your desperate attempts to stay clear of him. We're no legal experts, but if any of these two are missing from your recording, you attorney might actually earn his pay if you manage to win.

Just like we're not all created equal, the same can be said about insurance scammers. Some are more skillful than others, and then there are those who are plain stupid. The guy in the video below sits somewhere in the middle. He first appears in the picture by cutting in front of the camera car from a side street, even though there wasn't enough time to do it cleanly. At least not at the speed he was moving.

We suspect there's a reason the audio is cut off, and that's because our driver probably had a few things to say to the one in the Volkswagen Golf VI. This is why the whole "insurance scammer" thing should not be taken as a certainty, even though it does look very likely. So, after the presumed swearing and honking, the slow moving Golf brakes even harder. The camera car has a low enough speed and plenty of space to stop safely.

He then does the smart thing and puts some distance between himself and the Golf. At least that's what it looks like at first, because then he slams on the accelerator, determined to catch up with him. But as he approaches his newly found friend, the Golf does it a second time and merges into his lane. Left with insufficient time to brake, the collision is inevitable.

Now there's no question the Golf driver did it on purpose - he cut in front and hit the brakes at the same time - but the real dilemma is whether this was his intention from the beginning, or the other guy - the one with Buddha on the dashboard - managed to piss him off just about enough to deliberately cause a crash. Whatever the answer, he sure didn't bet on the dashcam being there. He was very quick to get out and take pictures, but he had no idea they'd be worth nothing.
