2014 wasn’t dubbed by the automotive media “Year of the Recalls” just to make the headlines. It’s downright impossible to tell you how many millions of cars were called back over various mess-ups, but there’s factual evidence General Motors took the hardest blow of all affected manufacturers: 84 safety recalls and a tally of 30.43 million vehicles.
Monetary, logistically, legally and marketing-wise, last year was hell for General Motors and chief exec Mary Barra. Some are adamant that Lady Luck only comes with bangs, but Year of the Recalls seems to be Lady Bad Luck’s doing. Unfortunately for us motorists (and GM-developed car owners if applicable), the Year of the Recalls’ strikes back and it’s quite the big recall.

A statement released by General Motors informs that 521,817 vehicles are being recalled worldwide in two separate campaigns. The first recall covers 468,887 units of the 2011 to 2012 Chevrolet Malibu. What is the problem GM wants to fix on these cars? “The flexible steel cable that connects the safety belt to the vehicle can fatigue and separate over time as a result of occupant movement in the seat,” a statement reads.

The automaker states that it received 36 claims from Malibu owners. Other than a minor injury reportedly related to the condition, no crashes or fatalities have been reported. Moving on to the second safety recall, an estimated 52,930 examples of the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon are being called back.

As it happens, the mid-size pickup trucks are prone to be affected by “certain seat frame attachment hooks were not properly attached to the vehicle body during assembly.” Owners are instructed to contact Chevy or GMC’s customer care departments or visit the nearest dealership for inspection and a free-of-charge fix.
