After the Chrysler Group began an investigation into wireless ignition node (WIN) module concerns, the American automaker notified the NHTSA it's recalling a whopping 291,703 vehicles over a fault similar to the General Motors ignition switch recall saga.
Chrysler says that affected cars are equipped with an ignition key that may not return to the "on" position after being rotated to the "start" position. As such, the key and ignition cylinder stick between the two positions. The automaker informs that the ignition may also move from "run" to "off" or "accessory".
Such a scenario leads to the engine turning off, which isn't a nice situation to find yourself in especially while the vehicle is being driven on a crowded highway. In addition to the previously detailed, Chrysler notes a further consequence of the condition. If the ignition sticks between "start" and "on", that may cause the loss of certain electrical functions, as in airbags, the power steering, power braking, the lot.
But here comes the most ROFL part of this particular recall campaign - the remedy for this fault is currently under development, so all of those 2008 model year Jeep Commander, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Charger, Dodge Magnum and Chrysler 300 vehicles are being recalled, but the fix isn't ready yet. As if that wasn't enough of a screw up, the American carmaker hasn't provided a notification schedule.
