General Motors has announced a recall affecting 6,159 2012 Chevrolet Suburban and Express and GMC Yukon XL and Savana vehicles. The affected vehicle suffer from a defect that could result in loss of steering, a potentially deadly flaw that could have proven fatal if not corrected.
Thankfully, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says there have not been reports of any crashes related to the fault. And since the recall will begin shortly, on April 4th, owners of the affected vehicles will soon have their mind at ease.
"The steering gear pitman shaft may not have been adequately hardened and could fracture," states the recall summary. "If this condition occurs, a loss of steering could result, increasing the risk of a crash."
The reason that these 2012 model year vehicles have not yet crashed is that the fault will only appear after five months of the hardest service life.
