One dude from Orangeville, Ontario, Canada, is either the most rebellious dude in the world or the stupidest: he drove off from court minutes after he was handed a 1-year driving ban.
All jokes aside, the 37-year-old man is a convicted drunk driver, so if you’re wagering on “stupid” when he pulled this stunt, you’re probably right. The good news is that police caught up with him very quickly and he wasn’t on the road for long enough to do any damage.

According to The Canadian Press, the dude would have probably gotten away scot-free too if it hadn’t been for one officer from the Orangeville Police who happened to be in court with him at the same time.

“Investigators say an officer was in the courthouse in Orangeville, Ont., for an unrelated matter on Thursday when he watched the judge deliver her sentence to the man,” the report notes. “They say that several minutes after that, the man got in his car and drove off.”

Police were able to apprehend the man without incident, after a short while. He was charged with operation while prohibited and had his car impounded for 45 days. He is due back in court at the end of the month and, this time, he’d better keep from driving himself from the courthouse.

Funny as this little story might seem at first glance, there is nothing funny about drunk driving. It remains a leading cause of fatal accidents, despite sustained efforts from authorities to curb this dangerous behavior through education.

This dude’s behavior is perhaps even more dangerous, as it shows lack of remorse and of proper appreciation of the crime already committed. Maybe spending some time as a passenger in other people’s cars or a pedestrian would help bring the message home: drunk-driving is serious stuff. As is a court order.
