We’re pretty big fans of Rebecca Jackson here and once she starts splitting hairs talking about the latest cars out there, she’s got our immediate attention. This time, the car in question is the brand new MINI Cooper, the diesel version to be more precise.
The new hardtop is now using a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder diesel engine in the Cooper D version, making 116 HP and 270 Nm (200 lb-ft) of torque that can be hooked up to either a manual or automatic gearbox, both having 6 speeds at their disposal.

Compared to its predecessor, it might not look like a drastic improvement (2-liter diesel making 112 HP and the same amount of torque) but on the road, the differences are notable.

The smaller engine is also more economical, rated at combined fuel consumption of 67 mpg (3.5 l/100 km). However, a recent report claims that the new B38 unit might have some problems with the acoustics and, for now, MINI put a hold on deliveries.

Get inside the new MINI and you’ll immediately notice a drastic improvement over its predecessor, both in build quality and ergonomics. The small ConnectedDrive controller was replaced with one that resembles the new touch sensitive model used on the most recent iDrive interface while the electric windows controllers have been moved on the doors, where they belong.

The dash is still dominated by a huge round display at the center but the speedometer has been moved behind the wheel. In its place you now have a big navigation screen and other interesting toggles that are easier to reach now. It’s really a well sorted design.

On the road, the car feels planted and, through the new driving experience selector, you can now adjust the dampers to your liking, a first for any MINI.

Overall, the car has some issues to overcome but it is miles ahead of its predecessor. Compared to its modern rivals, things might not go so well for the new Cooper but there are other factors to consider when buying a car, other than just pure technical specs.
