Rear-Wheel Drive: The Reason We Love BMWs

In this day and age it's hard to explain what could possibly be pleasurable about the fact that, instead of going forward, you actually like going sideways. Today, everything has to be efficient, calculated and balanced.

That is true for current days, but what if you were born in a time when cars were driven just as much sideways as in a straight line? The day when E30 M3s were ruling the race tracks, the day when E28 M5s were the hype and the only electronic part inside them was a clock stuck in the dashboard.

Those were the days. In those times you really had to be a good driver in order to keep a BMW on track and avoid getting killed because of too much fun. We didn't have any DSC, ESP, ABS or anything electronic that could take away our enjoyment.

Although many gearheads criticize the fact that today we are limited by electronics, we have to admit: if they weren't needed they wouldn't have been invented. After the glory days of the E30 and E28 what were we left with?

That is why we need systems like DSC, ESP and ABS. Because, sometimes, we have to be protected from ourselves. And that is why you love a car manufacturer that allows you to completely turn off your electronic safety systems, because you can have fun when you want to, and be safe when it is needed.

Even so, we can always look back to the glory days of BMWs. They perfectly show the reason we love RWD: it makes you feel alive!
