It’s hard to think of the BMW i8 and keep in mind that it wasn’t developed by the Motorsport division of the company. While it’s extremely hard to believe, it’s also felt throughout the car.
The first reviews of the plug-in hybrid sports car revealed that while straight forward acceleration is breathtaking, in the corners it could use a bit more agility and some of the M magic. Sure, a couple of reasons add to that perception, like the all-wheel-drive setup and the skinny tires but overall, things could be even better.

The guys from Road & Track definitely weren’t playing around when they tested the i8 and got their stopwatches out to measure every thing. And we mean everything.

In a recent post on the internet, the guys showed the results they got with the i8 and they are more than interesting to check out. What captured out attention almost instantly was the o to 60 mph (96 km/h) sprint time. According to their calculations, the Bimmer did it in 3.8 seconds, a staggering 0.4 seconds faster than the official time BMW declared.

How is that possible? Well, the Bavarians, pretty much like any other respectable manufacturer out there, doesn’t report the best possible time they got with the car while testing as the official time. They report the figure they think most drivers will be capable of getting in ‘not-so-perfect’ conditions.

That means that the 4.2-second dash BMW is claiming can be achieved by anyone at almost any time and that faster times shouldn’t surprise anyone.

Other interesting results were also posted, like the 1/4 mile sprint that was done in 12.3 seconds at 114 mph (184 km/h), quicker than an E9x M3, for that matter.

One disappointing readout was the rolling 5-60 mph (8-96 km/h) sprint that was rated at 4.9 seconds but we’re guessing that had a lot to do with the software tweaks.
