RC TIE Fighter Brings Out Your Inner Star Wars Geek

There's no question that drones are the fad of the moment. In fact, we wouldn't be surprised if some rich rapper buys a gold-plated quad to show off on Instagram pretty soon. But the cool thing about this booming industry is that initiative and creativity still apply.

Take Olivier_C, a Youtuber who has already made a very impressive Millennium Falcon and has outdone himself with this RC TIE fighter he created from an existing drone chassis and lots of polystyrene.

Technically, this isn't the TIE fighter, it's the TIE interceptor, featured in Star Wars Episode VI Return of the Jedi. It has different wings and four laser cannons, but they make the same screeching sound when they fly by. During the reign of the empire (as in Darth Vader), TIE fighters were used everywhere because they could patrol both in outer space and planetary atmospheres, acting as fighters or scouts.

Believe it or not, but we have specs for both the "real" TIE Interceptor and the toy version. The big one used twin ion engines to reach a maximum speed of 1,250 km/h and had a total length of 9.6 meters (31 feet). The hull was made from titanium, but things like hyperdrive and plasma shielding were not included as standard.

As for the machine built by RC enthusiasts Oliver_C, it uses a Prophecy 335 frame, four 1,100kV motors and a LiPo 4S-1800mAh battery. Even though it looks small in the videos, it's actually quite a massive craft, weighing 1.2 kilograms (2.5 lbs) and with a wingspan of 1.2 cats. What? Check out the photo gallery and you'll get the joke.
