RBR Confirm Double Diffuser "No Sooner Than Monaco"

Red Bull Racing technical director Adrian Newey confirmed he'll turn all his attention towards creating a new double decker rear diffuser for the RB5. Although admitting it feels pretty good waking up the very next morning after scoring a historical 1-2 in Formula 1 – courtesy of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber the past weekend, in China – Newey warned there would be plenty of late nights ahead back at the Milton Keynes factory.

After the International Court of Appeal rejected the protests issued by Ferrari, Renault and Red Bull Racing on the “double diffuser”, Red Bull reacted immediately by sending Newey back to England to start development work on the new feature. The technical guru did not make the trip to China last weekend, as he began focusing on incorporating a new diffuser into the RB5, a work that's probably going to take him more than a month.

He echoed the announcement made by RBR's motorsport advisor Helmut Marko regarding the potential debut of the double diffuser for the Milton-Keynes team. Which means no sooner than the Monaco Grand Prix.

“There is no doubt that a double-diffuser does give performance. How much performance depends on how you interpret the regulations and how you adapt it to suit your own car, so that some teams will get more out of it than others,” said Newey, as reported by British site planetf1.com.

“It will certainly involve a lot of work, so we won't have a double-diffuser before Monaco. But I see it as another challenge. Unfortunately, it will involve some more late nights. That's Formula One: you can't afford to sit around and feel sorry for yourself, you just have to get on with it,” added the Red Bull technical.

Renault have already announced they will likely debut their completely-revised double diffuser (as they now use an interim version of it) at Barcelona, with several other teams – Ferrari, BMW or McLaren – expected to do the same in the upcoming weeks.
