Rare Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Edition Attracts Lenses in London

Just like quite a hefty amount of its fans, a team of McLaren engineers wasn't quite ready to let go of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren when the Germans decided to end the production of the model back in 2009.

That team of engineers was actually part of MSO (McLaren Special Operations), which is like a Skunkworks area of McLaren where only limited edition special projects are being made.

Sure, Mercedes-Benz has severed almost all connections with McLaren since the SLR has stopped production, but this hasn't stopped the Brits to create one final special variant of the long-hooded grand tourer.

Limited to a total production of just 25 units, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Edition by MSO is actually based on the earlier SLR, with most customers delivering their own cars to McLaren for the special edition conversion.

Powered by the same 5.4-liter supercharged V8 as the “regular” SLR McLaren, the MSO Edition therefore also has 626 hp and a massive 780 Nm (575 lb ft) of torque, with the major differences residing in an entirely new exterior look and some suspension tweaks.

Compared to a normal SLR McLaren, the MSO Edition is also 50 kg (110 pounds) lighter though, has a 20 percent increased downforce and an optimized underbody for more effective airflow, a ceramic coated lightweight exhaust system and a re-trimmed interior.

We are not entirely sure, but the white example in the following video might be the same car that was for sale back in December 2013, with the sellers mentioning that it is chassis number 003 from only the handful of SLR McLaren Edition built until now. As you can see, it draws quite a crowd.
