Yeah, we know, many Japanese car fans would love to own one of the 351 Toyota 2000GT made. Unfortunately they are horribly expensive and taking one for a drive will require a hell of lot of attention not to crash it. If you can’t tick mark these conditions, your only salvation lies in a Toyota Sports 800.
The Toyota Sports 800, or S800, was born only two years before the 2000GT, wearing most of its bigger sister’s shapes but coming in a smaller package. It’s almost as low, a bit narrower and comes with those glass covered headlamps along with fender-mounted rearview mirrors.
Oh, forgot to mention it’s a targa too. In fact, the Sports 800 adopted a targa roof before Porsche did a year after. It also comes with a 790 cc 2-cylinder flat engine making 45 hp. Not much, but the car weighs only 580 kg (1,279 lb).
Long story short, you can get one of these for a lot less than a 2000GT and still turn a lot of heads. Currently there’s one for sale at a dealership in Beverly Hills.
The clock shows the car did just under 50,000 miles (80,500 km). On the outside it looks pretty clean and even the removable top seems to be in great shape. The problem is in the engine bay and the undercarriage which seem a bit rusty. Some panels inside the cabin are also loose and need fixed.
Last bid now shows $69,500 and there are 16 days left before the auction closes. A steep price for such a small car, but don’t forget only 300 were made with left hand steering.
