We could refer to Paul Newman in many ways, whether we call him one of the greatest actors in Hollywood, a great film director, successful entrepreneur, gifted racing driver or a philanthropist. The winner of six Golden Globe Awards, he was also renown for being a great watch enthusiast. No wonder Rolex even named one of their rarest collections after the famous actor.
One of these unique vintage timepieces is currently on sale, but before we take a closer look at it we need to take a short detour through this rare collection.
The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona is a mechanical, self-winding chronograph that has been manufactured since 1963. Designed in three series, the Rolex Daytona was inspired by racecar drivers and enthusiasts. One of these people was nobody else than Paul Newman himself, who reportedly wore his Daytona every day from 1972 until his death in 2008. Rolex later named the model by the actor, something that made this collection even more rare.
Now, the Rolex Paul Newman Daytona in question comes with its original 18K golden case and is 37mm in diameter by 13.5mm thick. Manufactured in 1967, the unique timepiece comes with the original bezel with engraved units per hour scale. The screw down crown is operating perfectly, as are the round pump style chronograph pushers. The case is in very clean and mint condition and the lugs are thick and uniform.
The dial is finished in a creamy gold color with contrasting black subdials and peripheral minutes and seconds chapter. The subdials provide 30 minute and 12 hour chronograph totalizers and running seconds. Also authentic, the movement is the manual winding Rolex Caliber 722-1 with 17 jewels. Like there wasn’t enough gold already, the watch comes with a brown Rolex strap with 18K buckle.
The House of Gold claims the extremely rare vintage Rolex is guaranteed to be 100% original. Oh, we almost forgot, the watch is priced at (only?) $325,000.
