When it comes to musclecars that look terrifying in your rear-view mirror, the Plymouth Road Runner Superbird (or its Dodge Charger Daytona twin) is one of the best examples that come to mind. Developed for the NASCAR Sprint Cup series, these winged racers also became production cars as 1969 homologation rules required sales of 500 road vehicles.
By 1970, NASCAR rules changed and Plymouth had to build almost 2,000 road-going versions of the Superbird, but only 58 of them were offered with the infamous Hemi engine and a four-speed transmission. One of these very rare “Winger Warriors” will cross the auction block later this month via RM Auctions.
Estimated to fetch anywhere between $400,000 and $500,000, this 1970 Superbird wears an Alpine White exterior paint with black top and body graphics and has just 16,360 miles (26,328 km) on the odometer, with only 239 miles made since 1974. The vehicle was beautifully restored about 11 years ago and features in several Mopar events.
