Kit Kamper might not ring a bell, but it was one of the most famous teardrop camper trailers produced after the war. A 1947 example selling on Bring a Trailer is like a time capsule, showing how little people needed to feel comfortable.
When going camping, many want to take with them all the house comfort in the smallest possible camper. This is impossible, but having a lot of comfort in a tiny travel trailer made the teardrop trailers so popular before, during, and after the second world war.

Kit Manufacturing was a company started in 1945 with the idea of selling DIY kits for people wanting to build their own trailers. Soon, the founders moved on to build fully prefabricated trailers after their Kit trailers became enormously popular. This coincided with the return of servicemen from WW II to their homeland. People were absolutely crazy about going outdoors at the time, and the business was booming.

The Kit Kamper was launched in 1946 as a teardrop trailer made from war-surplus aluminum and fiberglass. Wheels were from Jeeps salvaged from sunken ships, and many had holes that needed welding. As basic as this sounds, the Kit Kamper was very comfortable, thanks to an innerspring mattress. By the end of 1947, Kit Manufacturing was building 120 trailers per week. The company is still in business today, building recreational vehicles and mobile homes.

Lucky for us, we’ve found one 1947 Kit Kamper for sale on Bring a Trailer. This is an excellent opportunity to see for ourselves how such a trailer looked like 75 years ago. And you know what? It doesn’t look much different, despite the design, materials, and equipment advancements. Like modern trailers, it features an inside bed able to sleep two and an external galley fitted with cooking equipment at the rear.

The interior features curved walls covered in red-stripped cloth and a carpeted floor. There’s no bed, which means the new owner will have the liberty to choose whatever they fancy. The kitchenette on the outside is accessed via a liftgate revealing aluminum surfaces, a two-burner propane stove, an icebox, and a propane bottle. A storage compartment is also present. The stove does not work on this trailer as it needs an older-style propane fitting.
