Only a handful of Cobras were produced in the 1960s, and those equipped with the big-block Ford FE engine are very collectible indeed. First sold through an Ohio dealership, chassis number CSX3318 is now looking for a new owner with very deep pockets because it’s a very correct and well-documented car.
During the ownership of Inglese Induction Systems founder Jim Inglese, the open-top brawler was refurbished with great attention to detail by Geoff Howard of Accurate Restorations. As part of the makeover, CSX3318 received S/C modifications like the prominent flares, hood scoop, side pipes, and competition-style fuel cap located on the top of the right rear fender.

BFGoodrich Radial T/A rubber wraps Sunburst knock-off wheels, the black leather seats are split by the four-on-the-floor transmission and a chromed ashtray, and the correct paint finish covers the all-aluminum body shell. Accented by Cobra and 427 callouts, the vehicle flaunts the correct louvers on the front fenders as well as the trademark bumper and grille opening.

The flat-black cockpit is beautifully minimalist, thanks to a few gauges and a three-spoke steering wheel with a wooden rim. Featured in the April 1981 issue of Car & Driver, the side-oiler V8 roadster takes its mojo from a four-barrel carburetor protected and beautified by a chrome-finish air cleaner.

Invoiced to Shelby American in 1966, this particular example of the Cobra 427 is heading to auction next month as one of the main attractions of Kissimmee 2021. Also featured in Roger Huntington's book American Supercars, Mecum describes the vehicle as “a streetable performance masterpiece.”

No estimate has been offered for CSX3318, but we do know that Mecum failed to sell it last year at Indianapolis. Originally expected to hammer for $1.4 million, the jaw-dropping Cobra didn’t go higher than $1,350,000 despite a very strong start to the bidding process. Given this information, don’t expect the big-block sports car to break any records next month.
