Range Rover Sport SVR Brings Its Supercharged V8 to Paris

Unveiled for the first time at Pebble Beach in the US this summer, the Range Rover Sport SVR model is the fastest car the Brits ever made. It also has the looks and sound to prove it and the crowd at the Paris Motor Show was electrified when introduced to the new addition of the range.

Featuring a 5-liter supercharged V8 under the bonnet that’s good for 550 HP and 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) of torque, the new SUV is impressive in both numbers and size. Just get close to it and you’ll immediately start feeling small.

That’s because the new SVR is nearly 5 meters long, 2 meters wide and 1.8 meters high with a wheelbased of 2,924 mm (115.1 inches). You guessed it, this is a huge car, by European standards. You’d also expect it to be pretty heavy at the same time but Land Rover made sure that isn’t as big of a problem as you’d think.

At 2,310 kg (5,093 lbs) you might think it’s too much but considering the size of the thing and the engine, it couldn’t’ve been any lighter. In this regard, the car has an aluminum monocoque that reduces its weight by 39% compared to its predecessors. The suspension is also made of aluminum and features wide-spaced double-wishbones at the front and an advanced multi-link layout at the back.

It’s still a Range after all

Wearing the Range Rover badge on the bonnet means that this thing has to be capable off road as well as on normal roads. Therefore, despite having a 0-62 time of 4.5 seconds, the SVR is also capable on less than ideal terrains.

Wheel travel is rated at 260 mm up front and 272 mm round the back, the vehicle can wade up to 850 mm and has a towing capability of up to 3,000 kg (6,613 lbs).

What about that engine? Anything new?

The 5-liter supercharged V8 is now tuned to deliver 40 HP and 56 Nm more than its predecessor. With 550 HP and 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) of torque, it’s right up there with the engines of this car’s competitors like the X5 M for example.

However, while the new BMW will use a 7-speed DCT gearbox, the Range will stick to an updated ZF 8-speed gearbox and its trademark all-wheel drive systems.

The exhaust wasn’t left out either. To make sure the sound is just right, engineers equipped the SVR with a two-stage active exhaust that has electronically controlled valves. Therefore, when you’re cruising on the highway you won’t be bothered by drone or headaches while lapping the Nurburgring will bring out the beast in you and the car.

The Range Rover Sport SVR is now on sale, starting at £93,450 in the UK. The rest of the markets are still to receive it by the end of the year.
