Randy Pobst Shows You How to Overtake on the Track Using an M4 and a 911 GT3

Pro driver Randy Pobst recently started his own internet show, hosted by the MotorTrend channel, in which he wants to share some of his wisdom and experience on the track. Being a proper racing driver for all these years must’ve come in hand and showed you his first episode a while back.

Back then the focus was on drifting and how to corner as inefficiently as possible, while also going through a set of tires if needed. Well, this time, in episode two of The Racing Line, Randy went the other way around.

On this occasion, we’re going to learn how to be as efficient as possible and overtake your rivals on the track. There are a couple of different ways to do that and we’re going through all of them in the eight minutes of the video.

There are a couple of prerequisites that you’ll be needing before setting off to pull the perfect overtake maneuver and they include power, speed, brakes, tires and another key component we’ll let Randy tell you all about.

First of all, you have the drive-by. This is the most basic type of overtaking where just a surplus of power and a straight line is needed to pass by your opponent. You could say this is the way we’re overtaking in real life most of the time. This can also be done in a set of curves, but you need to have the upper hand in handling.

Then you have drafting, which is mostly used in NASCAR these days and involves you hanging in the back of the car you want to overtake, to benefit from its aerodynamic drag. If you dare get close enough, you’ll be cutting through the air more efficiently than your opponent and you’ll be able to get ahead of him thanks to less aerodynamic drag which, in turn, allows you to build up speed faster.

When you’re all set and approaching a corner, cut out to the inside at the last moment and make sure you reach it before your opponent. Don’t forget to leave yourself enough room to brake efficiently.

You also have to take into account the braking zone, but we won’t go further into detail here and let the man himself explain everything with his own words. Enjoy!
