Ram TRX vs. Ford F-150 Raptor: Which Gets You The Most Truck for $77,000?

TFL recently took delivery of what they say is the first Ram TRX in the world. And luck would have it that a Ford F-150 Raptor is also sitting in their driveway. This has the makings of an excellent off-road truck comparison.

The Raptor is a special truck. Since its arrival in 2010, no rival has been able to combine power and off-road capability in quite the same way. But a new challenger arrives in the form of the 2021 1500 TRX, and Ram is sure its T-rex can eat the Raptor for breakfast - it even shows that as an easter egg under the hood.

They may look similar, but the two offer different powertrains. The Raptor is soon to be replaced, but the current model packs a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 delivering 450 hp and 510 lb-ft (690 Nm) of torque through a 10-speed auto. Meanwhile, the TRX uses a formidable Hellcat 6.2-liter V8 engine to make 702 hp and 650 lb-ft (880 Nm), put at the disposal of an 8-speed.

Yeah, that's quite the power gap. But in Car and Driver tests, the TRX was clocked at 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds while the Raptor did it in 5.1 seconds. Also, the V8 is estimated at 12 mpg combined vs. 16 mpg (19.6 vs. 14.7 liters per 100 km) with the Ecoboost, though both of them honestly have a gas addiction.

Just about the only thing they have in common is the price. The TRX starts from $71,690, which is $13,555 more than its direct competitor. However, in this situation, both sticker for around $77,000, and the first difference this review highlights is the whee-tire combination. Interestingly, the TRX has a higher top speed of 118 mph (vs. 112 mph) purely because of tires.

The TRX takes advantage of the newer Ram design, so we think it looks better. Its cabin may also feature better materials and features. A new Raptor is just around the corner, based on the groundbreaking new F-150. But can the tables be turned without upgrading to a Ford V8?
