You may remember that our carparazzi team caught a heavily camouflaged mid-size truck testing last month? What’s dubbed as the second coming of the Dodge Dakota will not happen according to Ram’s chief exec officer.
If you aren’t up to date with what Fiat-Chrysler is currently working on, I’ll be much obliged to explain it to you. Mitsubishi and Fiat struck a deal recently, which will see the Italian brand rebadge the 2015 Mitsubishi L200/Triton then sell it in Europe and probably South America.
Until now, the question was whether the Ram Trucks brand will re-rebadge Fiat’s upcoming mid-size pickup truck as the Dakota. In a class that gave us the Colorado and Canyon, Dakota seems like pretty fitting nameplate, doesn’t it? Furthermore, lots of people would like to buy an all-new Dakota truck.
Let’s not jump to any conclusions yet though. In a recent interview with Allpar.com, Ram Trucks CEO Bob Hegbloom was asked if the marque is “going to be using a Mitsubishi-based truck down there [South America]. Where does the Mitsubishi fit into the line between the Strada and 1500?” Care to guess how Bob replied?
Without further ado, the answer is straight to the point: “the only announcement I’m aware of is an announcement with Mitsubishi that Fiat Professional has. Ram is not connected.”

Alas, FCA US LLC doesn’t intend to return to the mid-size pickup truck game. Happily, however, Bob assured that Ram Trucks will concentrate on its DS/DJ full-size line of light and heavy-duty workhorses.
Fun fact: Ram CEO Bob Hegbloom drives a Ram 1500 EcoDiesel in Laramie Limited guise.
