As we’re counting down on this challenging year, it’s time to look back and do a recap of the best and worst it’s brought us. Like many other recaps, this particular study can serve as a valuable lesson in the new year.
According to the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), even though the number of drunk driving incidents has been decreasing yearly due to stricter regulations and various awareness campaigns, DUI-related accidents are still a significant issue. In the U.S. alone, more than 10,000 people a year die in DUI crashes, with one in five fatalities killed in alcohol-related accidents in which BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration) was under the legal limit.
Look at it however you want, but drunk driving kills and, when not, poses a serious danger both for the driver and other participants in traffic, whether they’re other motorists, pedestrians or cyclists/motorcyclists. There is no such thing as “I’ll knock back a couple of drinks and still be fine to drive.”
That said, it seems some drivers are more prone to thinking this way.
A new study by insurance comparison aggregator Insurify reveals that RAM 2500 drivers are at the top of that list. Comprising data from 2.7 million insurance applications (which includes detailed recent driving history and the vehicle driven), Insurify reveals that RAM 2500 drivers with one DUI citation represent 45.3 per 1,000 drivers. To get more specific, this means that at least one in every 22 RAM 2500 drivers has been cited at least once for DUI, which is almost double the national average of one in every 56.
It’s not just RAM 2500 drivers that are likely to drive drunk: the same study reveals truck drivers, in general, are serious DUI offenders, with ten of the cars on the list being pickups: Chevrolet S-10, Dodge Dakota, Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Silverado, and GMC Sierra. Despite being the most popular pickup truck in the U.S., the Ford F-Series is not on the list, so overgeneralizing that all truck drivers are DUI offenders would not be wise.
Drivers of luxury cars are also featured on the list and even get a double whammy from Insurify. Drivers of BMW 4-Series, Audi A4, and BMW 7-Series are prone to DUI, but they also happen to be among the rudest drivers in traffic.
At the opposite pole are drivers of the Toyota RAV4, the Hyundai Santa Fe, and the Toyota Sienna, who have the lowest rate of DUI citations, with 0.61, 0.65, and 0.69 percent, respectively.
