Yesterday at the Detroit Auto Show, the Blue Oval really outdid itself by presenting high-performance vehicles such as the 2017 Ford GT, 2016 Shelby GT350R Mustang and 2017 F-150 SVT Raptor. It’s wrong to classify the 2015 Ram 1500 Rebel as the proper rival for the all-new SVT Raptor, but the full-size Ram truck has something to boast about too.
The second most notable FCA US LLC product to debut at NAIAS after the Pikachu-like Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, the 2015 Ram 1500 Rebel differentiates itself greatly from the rest of the light-duty range. A huge, blacked-out single-slat radiator grille strikes you most as soon as you approach the Rebel. This kit is further aggressive-ified by big Ram lettering.

It was a bit strange to look at a Ram workhorse without the classically correct crosshair radiator grille, but we’re not complaining here. The Rebel looks imposing and ready to head off the beaten path anytime you fancy off-road action. Available only in Crew Cab configuration, this machine is further enhanced on the visual front by cladding and redesigned front and rear bumpers for better approach and departure angles. Even the 17-inch two-tone rims look the part with 33-inch rubber.

2015 Ram 1500 Rebel rivals the likes of the 2015 Ford F-150 FX4 and 2015 Chevrolet Silverado Z71

Two chromed exhaust exits, black taillamp bezels and a black tonneau cover hiding a 5-foot 7-inch bed are other notable exterior features, as is the 10.3-inch (26.1 centimeters) ground clearance courtesy of a heavy-duty air suspension system. That powerdome and vented aluminum bonnet is not too shabby either. If you plan on ordering one, keep in mind the following things about this gentle giant: first deliveries are slated for the second half of the current year and there’s the possibility to choose between two and four-wheel drive.

If our money were on the line here, we’d ignore the entry-level 305 HP 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 and go all out with the 5.7 HEMI V8, which sends 395 ponies and 410 lb-ft (555 Nm) of torque to the wheels via a heavy-duty eight-speed automatic transmission. Once you hop in the driver’s seat, you get a solid feeling of good quality, fit & finish, joined by sturdy materials.

The perforated black leather upholstery is accented by Radar Red X-stitches. The Rebel nameplate badge on the glovebox door and the embroidered Ram heads are other elements that makes you feel really special inside this pickup.

I won’t bother you with the Uconnect touchscreen multimedia system or the Rebel lettering included in the instrument cluster. The last notable mention about how nice it feels inside is the softness of the front seats, which are beautified by gray stitching and gray Rebel lettering embroidered on the upper seat bolsters.

It’s a really cool and luxurious truck this, but nevertheless, we’re still waiting on that 2016 Ram 1500 update. With the 2015 Ford F-150 around, Ram Trucks cannot afford to miss a beat.
