Camaros of the first generation are a dime a dozen on the open market. If in the need for one and with a loaded bank account, you can find them in various guises, natural and unrestored as they rolled off the assembly lines, tuned, resto-moded, and even unrecognizable.
Not the same can be said about the Z/28 specification. Introduced in 1967 to complement the existing standard, Super Sport, and Rally Sport editions, it brought to the table unique fittings such as rally stripes, special wheels, and a variant of the 302ci (4.9 liters) engine that growled like a monster.
In 1969, there were over 20,000 Camaros Z/28 made. That’s not a small number, but finding one today that is in good shape is not an easy task.
This May, auction house Barrett-Jackson is holding an online auction instead of the regular in-person ones it has gotten us used to. On the list of cars to sell during the event is exactly such a Camaro.
Packing the signature rally stripes, in white, that extend from the cowl-induction black hood all the way to the original spoiler at the rear, the Z/28 is the perfect example of a well-preserved car from decades ago.
The car packs the original 302ci V8 engine, linked to a 4-speed manual transmission and developing 290 hp. It comes complete with the trim plate that attests its place in the Z/28 family, and has been specced with console, power disc brakes, special instrumentation gauges, tilt power steering and an AM radio. The interior is black, and features bucket seats.
Some modifications have been made to the car, and their origins probably lost to time. The auction info reads the “hidden VIN in cowl area has been removed with what appears to be new sheet metal.”
Barrett-Jackson is selling the car with reserve, but no mention of how much it is expected to fetch has been made.
