In the market for a rally-ready Porsche 911? We have excellent news for you, as Porsche racer Patrick Long has a pristinely resto-modded example that will be for sale this month.
He called it the Luftauto, and it will be sold at an auction organized by RM Sotheby's during an event with the same name. The event mentioned is dedicated to air-cooled Porsches, and is partly adapted by Patrick Long.
Unlike other rally-prepped Porsche 911s, this car was modified well after it left the factory. Fortunately, the extensive modifications include all-new parts, and the rebuilt car is ready to race today.
Changes include a custom-made roll-cage, an OMP steering wheel, a CNC-milled shift knob made of walnut and maple wood, rally-spec Recaro seats, and Schroth Rallye professional harnesses.
As in any self-respecting classic Porsche sold at auction, the engine serial numbers match those of the body’s VIN. The 3.2-liter flat six engine has been slightly upgraded with new headers and exhausts from SSi, and every major component of the engine has been replaced.
The biggest changes came to the body and the suspension. While the latter got a KW setup with long-travel dampers, suitable for rally racing on gravel and other surfaces, the body now features a roof rack, custom rally lights, front and rear guards, and a set of 15-inch Braid wheels with gravel tires.
The price of this car has not been announced, and the interested buyers must pre-register to participate in the auction held by RM Auctions on April 10, 2016. Judging by the look of the vehicle in the photos, the restoration and modification processes seem to have been performed flawlessly, and the car should have all it takes to surpass the $100,000 mark.
By the way, all the proceeds from this sale will be donated to Autumn Leaves Project, a charity dedicated to battling pancreatic cancer. This is the disease that killed Steve Jobs, and is a merciless form of cancer that is recognized for its ability to remain undetected until it’s too late to fight.
