Rally Indonesia Seeking WRC Entry in 2012

Indonesia is looking for a way to get into the World Rally Championship as soon as possible. The announcement was made by a spokesman for Rally Indonesia, currently a regular round in the FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship.

We believe Indonesia has a great deal to offer the WRC. We’re very excited about the candidate rally coming up and we think we have everything in place to run a very successful round of the series,” said the spokesman, according to the WRC official site.

In 2010, Rally Indonesia will be a candidate event in the World Rally Championship – meaning it will hold a non-championship round in the series under FIA supervision. The country is no stranger from WRC action however, as it used to hold a regular round in the championship in back-to-back years in 1996 and 1997. A third edition of the rally was supposed to be ran in 1998, but was canceled by the FIA.

The organizers of Rally Indonesia have already started to pull the right strings in promoting the event for a future participation in the series, having been “present in Amman during last week’s Jordan Rally to promote the Makassar-based rally,” as reported by the WRC.

The base of Rally Indonesia was set for quite some time in South Sulawesi, and will this year feature a new service park at the Trans Studio. The candidate event is set to take place in late September (25-26), as the organizes picked this time of year to avoid tropical rains in the region.

Should the FIA officials decide that the Indonesian organizers are able to hold a rally at WRC standards, it is believed a potential spot in the series' calendar could be released for the 2012 campaign.
