Rally Drivers Go Sailing in New Zealand

The World Rally Championship will resume this weekend with Rally New Zealand, and the drivers arrived on North Island almost one week before the action will start on May 7. However, until they'll battle one another for stage wins this weekend, the Citroen and Ford works' drivers completed a yachting course around Auckland Harbour.

As revealed by the official site of the WRC, championship leader Sebastien Loeb, his Citroen teammate Daniel Sordo, Ford's Mikko Hirvonen and teammate Jari-Matti Latvala all got into the America's Cup racing yacht, NZL40, for a sailing lesson to remember. Once they were taught the basics of sailing/yachting, the drivers were put to work into tackling a course set up in the harbour.

This was a great way to relax before the rally starts. I didn't realise we would have to get so involved though! I've never done any sailing before so there was plenty to take in, but once I'd been shown how to grind, they couldn't keep me away,” admitted Hirvonen after the course was completed.

It was my first time on a big boat, and I was pretty surprised by how complicated it was to operate but it was a great experience to discover how everything works. I won't be swapping the rally car for a boat just yet though,” added his title rival and reigning world champion Loeb.

The day did not end with a sailing experience for the drivers though (who were also joined by Citroen Junior's Sebastien Ogier), as they were all invited to a 40 metre bungee jumping session from Auckland's Harbour Bridge. Sebastien Loeb offered the show of the day, as the Frenchman skillfully proceeded to a series of somersaults at his second jump.

I've done a few jumps before so wanted to try something a bit different,” explained the Citroen driver.
