Darren Pool was driving his Talbot Sunbeam over a small jump when caught in a gust of wind, which eventually caused his car to spin five times, then twice end over end.
Rescuers feared Darren and co-driver Chris Beer had been killed in the smash, but, by miracle, 35-year old Darren suffered only minor cuts and co-driver Chris Beer, 37, escaped with bruises to his face.
The battered car eventually came to a halt 150 yards from the rally course (at Epynt, in mid Wales). According to SkyNews, Darren said: “I was going over a jump Id done about 25 times before but this time for some reason we lost our line while we were in the air.”
“After a few rolls my helmet was ripped off and at one stage my arms and legs were hanging out of the window. It was very scary. It felt like we were in a tumble dryer for 10 minutes.”
Darren and Chris both lost consciousness momentarily before being pulled from the car and flown to hospital for checks.
Chris said he feels lucky since medics told him the force of the rolling car had forced his internal organs upwards and his eyes could have popped out of his head. “ It feels I've been in the ring with Mike Tyson. But I also feel very lucky to be alive,” added Chris.
