Rally-centric Corvette Sting Ray Convertible is an Interesting Auction Lot

After we found out that the 2015 edition of the Goodwood Festival of Speed will add a “Catch my Drift?” category, a little bird told us that Bonhams is preparing a special old-timer for the annual hill climb event. The adjacent Corvette Sting Ray Convertible rally car won’t race, but it will hit the auction block for an estimated £40,000 (roughly $60,880).

Considering that a brand spanking new Corvette Stingray goes for $55,000 before opening the options list, the old-school, rally-centric Corvette seems to be good value for money. The goodies list of this 1964 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray Convertible rally car starts with what’s dwelling underneath the gorgeous body shell - a 340 cu.in. V8 mill.

The 5.6-liter V8 motor is believed to produced 349 BHP, an output described as just enough oomph to make “E-Types and 911s look pedestrian.” We bet it also packs quite the aural punch when you stretch the legs of the American lump. Mated to a four-speed manual, the V8-engined rally Corvette was rallied multiple times, with Mr. Duncan Robb-Cummings behind the steering wheel. From 1998 to 2001, Duncan and the C2 Corvette campaigned in the Monte Carlo Challenge.

Another motorsport event the car participated in is represented by the 1999 Rallye Des Lavandes and the 2000-2001 Rallye de Paris. It was even featured in popular magazines such as Classic Car Weekly and Classic & Sports Car. Considering it comes with a huge history folder containing photos, MoT files, ferry passes, entries and correspondence concerning all the events it took part in, this Corvette is a fine rally car.

“LMD 126B” also participated at Goodwood on the last six occasions it was invited. With 82,999 miles (133,573 km) showing on the clock, the Corvette recently came out of storage for a minor restoration job and a fresh MoT. The owner is adamant he spent over £12,000 on this vehicle in the last 12 months, with bills to prove the expenditures. The carburetor and fuel pump have been reconditioned among other operations, but the most important detail is that the chassis has been cleaned, treated and re-undersealed.
