Raikkonen: KERS Won't Be Decisive

Following his first test with the new Ferrari F60 at Mugello, Finland's Kimi Raikkonen argued that the new Kinetic Energy Recovery System will not make a whole lot of difference in terms of on-track performance in the upcoming season. He insisted that the new technology only offers a short time of power boost that won't be decisive throughout a race.

“Both days the use of KERS had positive results. The system works well like every other new component. You have more power but for such a short time that I think it won't change things much. Maybe it's an interesting invention, but I don't think it's decisive,” said Raikkonen after his first two days of testing the new unit.

Ferrari have admitted they are late on developing their KERS unit and will more than likely not be able to start the new season with a functional KERS device. However, team principal Stefano Domenicali conditioned the winning of a 3rd consecutive constructors' title by getting the grips on KERS as soon as possible.

“When we realize that the performance guaranteed by KERS is up to expectations, then it is our task to use it. This is our goal if we want to win the world championship,” had stated Domenicali during the unveiling of Ferrari's 2009 challenger last week.

BMW's Robert Kubica also thinks KERS will not make that much of a difference next year, as the power boost provided by the new device will be counteracted by the extra weight of the unit (in the vicinity of 40 kg). According to Kubica, the extra weight will be tough to handle by heavier drivers, as it will affect car's weight distribution and stability.

“It's going to be a really big thing but we will have to wait and see. I feel that it will be an even bigger disadvantage to be taller and heavier. But I cannot change it,” admitted Kubica after trying on the new BMW Sauber F1.09 yesterday.
