Raikkonen Admits Underdog Status in Turkey

Finland's Kimi Raikkonen admitted he is now waiting for racing weekend more eager than he did before, as he has a lot more to be optimistic about. The Ferrari driver praised his team's efforts of turning the clock on the 2009 campaign, as they've revised the Ferrari F60 in such a way that the car is now fighting for podiums in the championship.

The upcoming race at Istanbul is no reason why Ferrari and Kimi Raikkonen should not look at the future a little more optimistic, as all races at the Turkish Otodrom have been so far won by the two. The inaugural 2005 Turkish Grand Prix was clinched by the Finnish driver – while in a McLaren car, however – while the last 3 races have all been won by Ferrari's Felipe Massa.

With Brawn GP winning 5 out of the first 6 races this year, the Ferrari-an reckoned that his team will have to play the underdog role for the first time in years at the Istanbul Otodrom. However, he did admit the latest improvements to the F60 make him a little more positive for the weekend.

Now, almost half way through the season, I’m much more optimistic than I was at the start, especially with the steps we’ve taken in the last two races. We know that there are further improvements coming up, which makes me think positive about the future,” said Raikkonen.

Ferrari always went very well at the Turkish GP over the last three years, but this time Brawn GP is the great favorite, because they won five out of the six races so far. We’re closing the gap, but we’ve got to give it our all to get back in the lead.”

I think that it’s the downforce we still have to make up ground compared to Brawn GP and Red Bull, but we’re heading in the right direction,” pointed out the 2007 F1 champion.

In addition to expressing his feelings ahead of the Turkish Grand Prix, the Fin also assured his fans that everything is all right following his crash in Rally della Marca, although a little more fun wouldn't have hurt anyone.

Last Saturday I made my first experience in a rally on tarmac in Italy. I had lots of fun as far as the competition and the Italian fans’ support were concerned. It was a pity that the fun it didn’t last long,” concluded Kimi.
