When you’re top dog in tennis, you can afford the best of the best. With a little discernment, you can also make a solid choice – much like Rafael Nadal, who opted for the ace of catamarans when shopping for a new yacht.
Sometime last year, Nadal commissioned a Power 80 catamaran from Sunreef Yachts. Last week, in his hometown Mallorca, Spain, he received delivery of the custom-designed cat, which stands out as the perfect blend of luxury and seaworthiness. Sunreef President and founder Francis Lapp was personally on hand to deliver it.

Nadal and Lapp go a way long back and it’s because of this tight relationship that the tennis ace came to order his own cat from the builder. Having previously sailed on rented Sunreef yachts, he eventually settled for a Power 80 cat. The 24-meter (78-foot) multi-hull is estimated at $5 million and was specifically made for longtime cruising.

“My team in GdaDsk made every effort to create the yacht Rafa and his wife Maria dreamed of,” Lapp says of the delivery, in a statement to Boat International. “I am convinced that they will have a great time with their friends and family on board.”

With power options of twin 575hp engines or twin 1,200 hp engines, the Power 80 can accommodate 12 guests in four private cabins and one master suite, and four crew. It stands out for the superyacht-worthy tender garage, which comes packed with a number of watertoys, but also for other luxury amenities like a waterfall-fed spa pool on the upper deck, a retractable hard-top, bar and lounge, and generous and luxuriously furnished relaxation areas.

Taking delivery of his new toy, Nadal made sure to stress that the cat will be put to good and proper use. “As someone from an island, as I am, the sea is part of our lives and It’s not a secret that I love the sea. Every time I am at home in Mallorca I try to go out and find that time where I can just enjoy my time on a boat,” he said.

Photos of a standard Power 80 cat from Sunreef Yachts are included in the gallery. Nadal’s is a custom piece, so for a better appreciation, imagine it several times more luxurious.
