Racing a Miata Sometimes Looks Like a Double PIT Maneuver: Playboy MX-5 Cup Crash

All those stating the Miata is not manly enough are now asked to take back their words. Such people might believe that racing MX-5s is a bit like having a soapbox weekend, but be warned, playing the motorsport game in these Mazdas can be tough as hell.

Heck, at times, it might even look like Destruction Derby with a double PIT maneuver. We're not kidding - at first sight, this is what you'd be tempted to say about the driver of the filming Miata in the video below.

The guy notices a gap between two opponents and decides to go for it. As he starts entering what appeared to be a tight, but open space, the three cars collide, with the two Miatas in front of him being sent spinning of the track.

Take a closer look though and you'll notice the driver of the red Mazda (the one on the left) seems to be at fault here. It appears that the man veered right as not to let the faster middle Miata overtake, causing the three-car crash.

The accident took place during a race included in the Mazda MX-5 Playboy Cup and even the carmaker's description of the series makes it sounds like drivers are racing fluffy bunnies.

"The Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup is designed to give sports car drivers an opportunity to run on high-profile weekends in an economical, entry-level racing series. The series uses stock Mazda MX-5s, with suspension modifications and strict safety modifications, spec BF Goodrich f-Force R1 tires," the official description reads.

These Miatas can be gifted with performance parts, but the engines remain sealed, with Mazda explaining this leads to "close racing, with an emphasis on driver skill."

Unfortunately, skill and character are two different aspects of a driver's personality. We've seen tons of crashes from this series before, but the douchebaggery included in this accident has to be special.
