Queen Elizabeth Used to Drive This Jaguar X-Type Sportwagon

In the 64 years since she became Queen following the death of King George VI, Elizabeth II owned countless cars. For most of her engagements as a Queen, Elizabeth II is driven in luxurious barges such as a Bentley or a Rolls-Royce. But when she just wants to drive herself, the Queen uses much more plebeian cars such as a Jaguar.

The 2009 Jaguar X-Type Sportwagon featured above is one of the Jags the Queen has driven herself. Pardon me, but “only driven by an old lady” is an appropriate joke on this occasion. After seven years in which the car was part of her household, Elizabeth II parted ways with it. Fletchdale of London recently sold the British feline for £15,000, which translates to approximately $20,815 at current exchange rates.

The X-Type Sportwagon is a V6 Sovereign model equipped with a dog grille. That’s only natural considering how many corgi dogs the Queen owns, albeit I can’t picture Elizabeth II taking the furry beasts to the vet herself. Under the skin of this Jag, you’ll find some bits and bobs from the Ford Mondeo, as well as a 5-speed automatic mated to a 3-liter V6 with 288 horsepower (231 PS) and 180 lb-ft (244 Nm).

With such a caring first owner and a mere 7,600 miles (12,231 kilometers) registered on the odometer, this particular 2009 Jaguar X-Type Sportwagon still has lots of miles to go until bits of interior trim start to fall off and head gaskets start to leak. As I’m sure you know, Jaguar wasn’t a byword for reliability when it was owned by Ford. But then again, the first-ever estate in the history of Jaguar opened the way for the XF Sportbrake and the upcoming XE estate.

Other than the Jaguar X-Type Sportwagon, the Queen has also been seen driving cars such as a Land Rover Defender, the posher Range Rovers, a Rover P5, and so forth. Her keen taste in cars can be traced back to World War II, a period when Her Majesty became accustomed to all sorts of vehicles as a mechanic in the Auxiliary Territorial Service.
