The agreement will see Quantum be the exclusive supplier of the Q-Drive hybrid control systems and solar roof module for the upcoming vehicle. In addition to that, Quantum will receive a royalty payment on each Karma sold that uses its Q-Drive system.
“We are quickly approaching the Karma production phase and are excited about commercializing our innovative Q-Drive PHEV control systems," said Alan P. Niedzwiecki, the President and CEO of Quantum. "Fisker Automotive has announced that production will begin at the end of calendar 2010 and plans on producing 15,000 Karma vehicles per year starting in calendar 2011."
The supply agreement also states that Quantum will be Fisker’s supplier in the future, offering components for the automotive producer’s next projects, after it meets the Fisker’s performance, cost and delivery standards.
“The Q-Drive control and software system has evolved over several years of innovation and development at Quantum. Quantum's Q-Drive system takes full advantage of the performance potential of electric drive systems while achieving high fuel mileage and low emissions through its integrated plug-in hybrid electric design,” stated the press release.
Quantum is continuing the testing and validation of its Q-Drive system, as part of a funded development program with Fisker Automotive and will debut production by the end of the current year.
The Q-Drive includes a 2.0 liter turbocharged gasoline engine and two electric motors, which deliver 201 hp each. The internal combustion unit is used as a range extender: it is mated to a generator to offer an electrical connection to the motors and recharge the batteries.
