Quantum Chosen to Supply USPS Electric Vehicle

Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide (QTWW) announced that it has been selected by the US Postal Service (USPS) to supply an electric vehicle which will be used as a postal delivery vehicle.

Quantum competed with four other companies to participate in a 12-month test program which will be conducted by the USPS in Washington DC. Depending on the demo’s success, the infrastructure could be extended to a great percentage of the USPS fleet.

With a total of 178,000 Long Life Vehicles (LLV) this is the largest civilian fleet in the country (this represents the majority of the USPS’s total number of cars). Converting it to electric power would help dramatically reduce emissions, reduce dependence on imported petroleum and also develop the country’s EV industry. Thanks to the large size of the fleet, this could also become a valuable asset to US’s Smart electricity Grid.

Quantum’s Long Life Vehicle (LLV) platform will underpin the vehicle. It will feature the company’s “Quiet” battery electric drive system. A bespoke version of this will be integrated into a Grunmann LLV. To be more specific the “Quiet” system has been adapted to the exact specifications of the USPS vehicles, such as 500-700 stops per day. The vehicle will offer a 20-15 mile range.

"We are excited to have the opportunity to demonstrate the performance, efficiency, and reliability of Quantum's Quiet electric drive system to the US Postal Service," said Alan P. Niedzwiecki, President and CEO of Quantum. "We are glad to see the US Government continue to take a leadership role in greening our country and building a domestic EV industry."
