Chinese automakers are mad about battery-powered cars, partly because driving an electric vehicle is cool and partly because the Chinese government offers a sizable monetary incentive to those who go full electric instead of ICE. Chinese automaker Qoros has caught wind of the trend, the Qoros 3 Q•LECTRIQ being the first step in that direction.
Presented at the 2016 Beijing Motor Show in concept form, the 3 Q•LECTRIQ is preceded by the 5 SUV Q•LECTRIQ, an all-electric crossover that made its debut in January. Compared to the 5 SUV Q•LECTRIQ, the 3 Q•LECTRIQ will be put into production. Before that happens, the pre-production car will hit the road in late 2016. Chen Anning, the chief exec of Qoros, is delighted about venturing into battery-powered territory.
“These are exciting times at Qoros. We are ramping up sales of our new Qoros 5 SUV, while continuing our tradition of keeping our Qoros lineup in the forefront of technological innovation. Our electric vehicle roadmap is robust, and our cooperation with Christian Koenigsegg stands to change how the industry views combustion engines. Both shareholders of Qoros are pleased with what we see coming down the road and will offer support as always to the future growth of the company,” he said. Yup, Chen is referring to that Christian with the hypercars.
What does the innovation-driven startup promise for the production version of the Qoros 3 Q•LECTRIQ? As hardly believable as it may sound to some readers, Qoros is aiming high: a range per charge of 217 miles (350 kilometers), 80 percent quick charge within an hour, a top speed of 100 miles per hour (162 km/h), and 7.9 seconds to 62 miles per hour (100 km/h). Ambitious numbers, alright, but Qoros is an ambitious bunch.
Over the course of 2014, the manufacturer sold 6,867 cars in its domestic market. In 2015, sales ramped up to 14,247 cars. In the first three months of 2016, Qoros sold 5,896 units. Slow and easy is how it’s done. By comparison, Tesla Motors sold 16,689 electric vehicles in the United States in 2014. I’m keeping my fingers crossed Qoros will prove that the underdog can make it, at least in China’s automotive market.
