Qoros 3 Hatch Pricing Announced

Let's get straight to the point: if you want to buy a brand new Qoros 3 Hatch, the Chinese manufacturer will charge you ¥119,000 for the entry-level model in its home market, translating to $19,257, €14,167 or £11,322 at current exchange rates. By comparison, a VW Golf will set you back £16,975 in the U.K. and $17,995 in North America, so what exactly does the Qoros 3 Hatch offer for the low base price?

For starters, Euro NCAP found out last September that the Qoros 3 in sedan flavor is the safest car it tested in 2013. That's a stellar achievement considering this is the Chinese manufacturer's first model ever and the first ever Chinese car to get the coveted 5-star Euro NCAP rating. Presumably, the hatch version of the 3 is just as safe as the sedan, and that's the safety box ticked.

When the Qoros 3 Hatch was unveiled in the flesh at the Geneva Motor Show 2014, auto journalists either loved or hated the car. Despite its origins, the 3 was penned by Gert Hildebrand, a renown automotive designer that worked for Opel, Volkswagen and MINI on a number of occasions. Therefore, both the exterior and interior of the Qoros 3 seem pretty European to us. In terms of oomph, the hatchback is offered with two 1.6-liter four-pots: an entry-level 126 horsepower variant and a 156 horsepower turbocharged variant.

As for the base trim level called 'Essence', the $19,257 hatchback comes with a lot of standard kit, chief among which an 8-inch touchscreen Multi Media Hub, 16-inch alloy rollers, air con, keyless start, electronic stability control and a six-speed manual. Step up to the mid-range 'Experience' model and you get QorosQloud 3G Internet connectivity, leather on the steering wheel and gear lever knob, cruise control, climate control, a rearview backup camera and a 150-watt six-speaker stereo.

Compared to the 'Essence', this trim level gets a six-speed DCT automatic as standard and it will set you back ¥139,000 ($22,469/ €16,504/ £13,185). Not bad for a comprehensively kitted hatchback. For a little bit more dough, the 'Experience Plus' will further enhance the Qoros 3 Hatch with goodies such as a power glass sunroof and special design 17-inch alloys, also offering the ability to opt for the turbocharged version of the 1.6-liter mill.

The range-topping 'Elegance' model will get you automatic Bi-Xenon lights, 18-inch rollers, power adjustable and heated front seats with two memory settings on the driver's side and leather everything. How much do you reckon this fully loaded Qoros 3 Hatch costs? Nope, it's actually ¥171,900 ($27,609/ €20,289/ £16,197).

"This is another significant milestone in the history of our young brand," declared Volker Steinwascher, Vice-Chairman of Qoros Auto, at the Chinese launch event. "As we announce prices and specifications and open the order books, we are confident that the Hatch is going to appeal to the trendy, active, independent individuals for whom it has been designed and developed. Generous equipment levels combined with a high level of design, safety, engineering and production quality means the Hatch excels when compared to its competitors."
